Frost Cushion

Compressible EPS Void Form for Grade Beams and Foundations

Frost Cushion is a closed-cell EPS void form used under grade beams and concrete elements to help absorb frost heave and soil swell, protecting foundations, slabs, and buildings from damage.

APPLICATIONS

  • Grade beams
  • Concrete foundations
  • Light wood frame structures
  • Metal building structures
  • Projects subject to frost heave
  • Projects subject to clay soil swell
  • Concrete elements requiring compressible void
    form protection.

Frost Cushion™ – High-Performance EPS Void Form for Frost Protection

Frost Cushionâ„¢ is a high-performance closed-cell expanded polystyrene (EPS) void form designed to protect concrete foundations from frost heave and expansive soil movement. Builders install it beneath concrete grade beams and other structural concrete elements to create a compressible space that reduces upward pressure on the foundation.

The closed-cell EPS structure prevents water absorption and maintains the integrity of the void form over time. It also limits soil migration beneath the concrete, helping preserve the designed air space. In addition, Frost Cushion offers excellent resistance to freeze-thaw cycles. The material is non-biodegradable and provides no food source for insects or pests, making it a durable long-term solution.

An innovative alternating curved-leg design sets Frost Cushion apart from conventional solid void forms. When frost or moisture causes the soil to expand, the support legs compress in a controlled manner. This design absorbs ground movement before excessive pressure reaches the concrete. As a result, foundations, slabs, and grade beams experience significantly lower uplift forces.

Frost Cushion safely supports up to 39 inches (1 metre) of freshly placed concrete during construction. After the concrete cures, the product compresses more easily than traditional solid void forms when the subgrade moves. This controlled compression helps protect the structure from frost-related damage without compromising construction performance.

At 50% compression, Frost Cushion produces an uplift pressure of less than 4.4 psi (30 kPa). This value is approximately 50% lower than the uplift pressure generated by standard solid void form products. Lower uplift forces reduce stress on structural concrete and improve the long-term durability of foundations.

Whether you are building residential, commercial, or industrial projects, Frost Cushion provides reliable frost protection, excellent long-term performance, and added confidence in challenging soil conditions.

About brand
Frost Cushion is a compressible EPS void form used beneath grade beams and concrete elements where frost uplift or clay soil swell may create damaging upward pressure. Its closed-cell structure resists moisture absorption and soil intrusion, while its engineered leg geometry allows it to deform and collapse more easily under subgrade uplift than solid void form products.
